Shakespeare in Saigon is a modern Australian love story with a difference.
David is about to retire as a high school English teacher, but faces major problems. His retirement plans are ruined when his family and fortune suffer, and he falls on hard times.
He moves to a new world in working-class Footscray, living alone in a rented flat. David meets his neighbour, Thanh – a young Vietnamese woman who has recently arrived in Australia. Thanh speaks no English, makes clothes for a pittance, and lives with her Vietnamese grandparents. David’s salvation comes when he decides to teach Thanh to speak English using the language of Shakespeare.
A love story where communication is a mixture of mirth and misunderstanding, Shakespeare in Saigon rejoices in the beauty of a language that has stood the test of time.
