March Season: Shadowlands by William Nicholson

Shadowlands
Nicholson's stage adaptation of his award-winning TV play relates the story of shy Oxford don and children's author C. S. Lewis and poet Joy Davidman in academic Oxford in the 1950's. Their relationship starts as an exchange of literary correspondence. When Joy arrives in Oxford her intellectual assertiveness delights Lewis but appals his condescending fellow academics, who are further shocked when Lewis goes through a marriage of convenience with her for immigration purposes.

Mel Edison battles what could be called a mid-life crisis. Together with his wife, Mel confronts noisy neighbours, pollution, a malfunctioning air-conditioner, a burglary, lack of water, redundancy and well-meaning family members, before proving that even the darkest storm cloud can have a silver lining.

November Season: I Remember Mama by John Van Druten

I Remember Mama

In the poorest part of San Francisco in 1910, an extended family of impecunious Norwegian immigrants are trying to prosper by the American formula of hard work and tough minded honesty. The formal head of the family, Uncle Chris is a blustering property speculator but the real centre of the family's life is the home of his niece, Mama Hanson and her family. Mama's selfless devotion to her Papa and their children, Dagmar, Christie, Katrin and Nels, leaves her little time for anything but work. She still manages, however to mediate in many squabbles between her three Aunts, Trina, Jenny and Sigrid, as well as soothing their relations with the volatile Uncle Chris. From the author of Bell, Book and Candle and I Am A Camera which later became the musical Cabaret.
